About Bo Town
Bo Town, Southern Sierra Leone
Bo is the second largest city in Sierra Leone (after the capital, Freetown) and the largest city in the Southern Province. Bo serves as the capital of Bo District as well as of the Southern Province. The city had a population of 149,957 in the 2004 census, and recent estimates are 198,292 and 269,000, though the last estimate probably includes the surrounding district. After Freetown, Bo is the leading educational, transportational, commercial and cultural center of Sierra Leone.
Bo lies about 140 miles (230 km) (by road) south-east of Freetown. Like in virtually all parts of Sierra Leone, the Krio language is widely spoken in the city of Bo, although English is the official language spoken at schools and government administration. The city is beginning to attract a number of private companies and NGO offices. Decentralisation policies in Sierra Leone mean that all government ministries are represented in the city. With growing numbers of families coming to work in the area, it became evident that there are very few schools in Bo which could cater satisfactorily in terms of standards, resources for the children of these families, especially the marginalised.
